Two Day Trails

Explore the West Coast

Everyone does not have five days available to see this wonderful part of the world.

We designed the perfect weekend/ mid-week getaway package for those who don’t. Choose from one of our Two Day Trail options which offer you the very best of that stretch of the coastline. (See interactive map). Remember you are welcome to send us what you would prefer to experience and we can tailor a trip to suit you.

Elands Bay Route

KM TOTAL

Check in after 14h00 and have a chance to visit the bird hide, walk the empty beach or be taken on a guided drive of the nearby Draaihoek Private Nature Reserve (this is subject to prior arrangement). Thereafter, guests will be treated to dinner and the calming sounds of the Atlantic Ocean.

Hiking Day

Guests will meet their guide and need to be ready to depart by 8 am. Enjoy empty beaches and vistas of pristine fynbos as well as unique bird life along the route. Your guide will show you to the cave where there is evidence of the San which, according to lead archaeologist, Professor John Parkington: “date back as far as 100 000 years and as recently as 300 years ago”. From the caves, guests will be shown the old Crayfish Factory and hear about some of the history and politics of the local fishing industry.
Enjoy a sundowner to finish off a good day’s hiking. Guests will be treated to a home cooked ‘West Coast-Style’ meal prepared by members of the community.

Half Day Hike

Guests will need to be ready to leave for their half day hike at 09h30 am. Enjoy your adventure around Verlorenvlei which is one of the Western Cape’s largest natural wetlands and is listed as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). The Vlei (Afrikaans for wetland) is home to more than 189 species of birds. The vehicle will then transport guests to Muisbosskerm, South Africa’s first open air restaurant, where you will enjoy very special Sunday lunch.

 

Guests will then be transported back to their vehicles.

Lamberts Bay Route

Check in any time after 14h00.  Guests arrive at Steenbokfontein and have the afternoon to settle into their accommodation and explore the Steenbokfontein farm. Perfect time to visit the empty and endless beaches which are a 10 minute walk away. Guests will be treated to dinner at the Plaaskombuis (Afrikaans for farm kitchen) where your host will share stories of the sea as well as giving you a background of the farm.

Hiking Day

Guests will be met by their guide and will get the chance to follow in the footsteps of San and hunter-gatherer groups who frequented the coastline. Visit the caves where you can see remains from the Khoisan who are said to be the last people to inhabit the cave approximately 300 years ago. The caves also hold rock art depicting wildlife including eland and elephant dating back between 2- 6000 years ago.

 

After visiting the caves guests will be guided north towards the town of Lamberts Bay. Depending on weather and availability guests may have the opportunity to interact with local fishers and learn about the Abalobi application – which uses technology to promote poverty alleviation and alternative livelihood creation.
Guests will have lunch and then have the chance to explore Bird Island, one of 6 sites world-wide where Cape Gannets breed (and the only breeding site which is easily accessible to the public). You will be treated to a wine tasting followed by a delicious home-cooked meal prepared by members of the community.

Half Day Hike

Guests will need to be ready to depart at 09h30. Meet your guide who will accompany you for your morning hike along the beach. Be prepared for a feast with a sea view at the famous Muisbosskerm – South Africa’s first and open air restaurant.

 

Guests will be collected after lunch and transported back to their vehicles.

Doring Bay Route

Check in any time after 14h00. Guests arrive at their accommodation in Doring Bay where you can spend the afternoon and evening exploring this small fishing town. Depending on availability, guests are shown the Abalone (endangered sea snail) Farm which is owned and operated by the community.

 

The setting for your dinner will be the iconic harbor overlooking the Fryers Cove jetty. Guests will get the chance to see the wine cellar as well as taste some of the Fryers Cove wines. The Sauvignon Blanc is highly recommended.

Hiking Day

Guests will need to be ready to depart at 08h30. You will meet your guide and begin what promises to be a scenic day of hiking. To your left the vast expanse of the blue Atlantic ocean and to your right a myriad of wild flowers and fynbos – all of this along a path above the rugged cliffs. In the distance the Olifants River awaits you. The group will follow an adventurous path along the Olifants River bank and discover the beauty of this estuarine ecosystem. Though not always available – there is the option to take a short boat ride up the river to your accommodation.

 

Guests will have dinner and enjoy a home cooked meal prepared by your hosts.

Half Day Hike

Guests will get the chance to explore the banks of the estuary and to visit the river mouth. The bird life and serenity of this ecosystem is exquisite. Guests are to meet at Muisbosskerm – South Africa’s first and open-air restaurant, where you will enjoy a feast with a view.

These trials aim to include our guests in pioneering a new trail with the intention of gaining valuable feedback on each guest’s experience.
